Re: Excuse Me Mr. Guru, The Proof Please.

I have to admit that I’ve been a fanatic Facebook fans lately. I have two choices to learn – I could read everything on Facebook and through trial and error OR, I can go for warp speed by buying courses to learn.

Well, I’m like you, I’ll choose option 2 and that’s how I ended up writing today’s rant.

I’ve gone through a Facebook course by a guru where the salesletter claims to teach me the strategy how I can build tens of thousands fans in a week or so. Sounds like a great deal to me, since I’m always pressed for time. Is the strategy revealed powerful?

Yeah, it is.

“Then what’s the problem, Patric?”

The problem is not the strategy; the problem is the strategy does not work.

I’m sick and tired with marketers selling courses to us WITHOUT caring about their customers – I mean, don’t they get it, we love to buy but for everyone’s sake, sell us stuff that you’ve tested first!

Before you read on, I want to state a strong point first: It’s noble and awesome to create courses to teach and make money in return. So I highly encourage you to do information business – it’s lucrative and rewarding.

The problems with most of today’s courses (especially Facebook related topics) are:

Filled with Theories. The Gurus teach you stuff that they THINK work but they themselves don’t do it. Isn’t that ironic? Like the Facebook course I’ve gone through, the concept sounds great but when its put to practice, it doesn’t work. And don’t even start saying I’ve followed the steps wrongly – I think I’m smart enough to figure out stuff I’ve learned by now.

But I should have done my own due diligence first by simply going to his Facebook fanpage, so it’s partly my own fault too. You’ve guessed it right; there are no tens of thousands “Likes” on the page. I mean, if what he’s teaching works like charm, wouldn’t it make sense that his fanpage should be the proof itself? Hmm.

We tend to take things for granted, especially when it’s backed by a strong Guru’s name. We always want to have the shortcuts and that’s how we fall prey to promises and hypes.

Here’s my plain and simple advice:

Next time you buy a course or attend a seminar, make sure the Guru have done what he’s going to teach you.

No Proof. This is almost the same as “filled with theories” but with a different twist. Many of the courses today will give you video tutorials how they do it but then, you can never find the real example! For instance, they tell you how cool they run ads here and there, but guess what… you’ll never see the real ad campaigns (it’s probably because the campaigns never exist in the first place?).

Nowadays, it’s so hard to find good courses that are supported with real proof that the strategies taught are already tested.

By the way, speaking of Facebook, here are 5 ways to profit from it:

Create Facebook fanpage and build your own followers. Same concept as building a lot of Twitter followers.
Run Facebook ads. Same concept as running Google Adwords, promoting your own product or affiliate programs.
Create apps to be sold or build a list.
Create games to be sold, build a list or sell the entire game to an ‘investor’.
Sell courses about how to make money from Facebook. I know more marketers successfully doing this by teaching the four Facebook topics above then doing any of them. And, I’ve never met anyone in person (yet) that have been making a lot of money from Fanpage, Facebook ads, the apps or games.

The TRUTH is, it’s easier to make money by becoming an information marketer – I’m not embarrassed to admit doing that because I believe I have a strong conscience. I think you’re the same too.

Let’s say you have this free ebook that’s of quality, around 100 pages. Here’s how to take it and turn it into a $197 information product…

First, increase the perceived value.

Free information is perceived to have a low value, especially free blog posts.

For instance, ebooks have a perceived value of $7 to $28.

Then a mp3 audio products are generally perceived at around $47.

Downloadable videos can be perceived up to $97 a piece.

Software is perceived anywhere between $97 to the $1,000s.

These are estimates based on studying marketing and observing prices. Some might disagree but that’s okay.

Turn your ebook into a form of downloadable media with higher perceived value by doing it yourself or hire someone to do it cheaply at Elance.com.

If you want to do a screen captured video, use Camtasia or a cheaper program like it. (Camtasia can be found at camtasia.com or techsmith.com/camtasia). CamStudio is free, but of less quality.

Then, add the right packaging to Increase perceived value even more.

Let’s say you took your free ebook and turned it into a 4-hour-long screen capture instructional video course and you’re selling it now for $97. If you offer 50% commissions to affiliates, you can have a ton of Super Affiliates promoting the quality product that has high value and high perceived value for $43.50 per commission.

For instance, originally, I wanted to turn Local Niche Secrets into a multi-media video course and sold it for $97 instead because it really has great content but as an ebook, I can’t fetch high price. But didn’t turn out well as the freelance fella never completed his job although he already got paid 50%.

What if I told you that by making two minor adjustments that you could triple the cost of this product and it’ll still have value?

Here’s what you do.

1) Call it a “course.”

2) Go to your graphics guy and tell him, “Instead of creating a graphic for just one 4-hour-video, make it look like 5 DVDs in a bulk package.”

Infomercials have proven time and time again that bulk packages out-pull single packages 5 to 1, because of higher perceived value.

Now you have a bulk package that you could sell for even $ 197 or more. If it’s a course in bulk, the perception of your product will be that it’s an investment by which there will be a return.

Before you can get your customer to want to buy your product, they need you to give them another big reason why.

You need to make it look like your product’s price is a drop in the bucket compared to the benefits that the prospect is getting!

So we do two things:

1) Pile on quality bonuses like audios, reports, interviews, you name it. This increases value.

2) You need a USP, a Unique Selling Proposition. You’ll need something of high perceived and unique value to close the deal. In your case, you could offer mentoring from your own online mentoring school or a free critique or free coaching of some kind.

These two things significantly increase the perceived value as well as the actual value of your product and now service as well. A prospect passionate about your subject would be willing to invest $197 as a one-time fee for $1,000s of dollars worth of products and services on your topic.

The great news is anyone can do this with a how-to ebook.

So that’s how you go from giving away a free ebook to making an easy $197 per day or more on the internet (and that’s just 100 visitors to your sales page per day converting at an average 1%). No guaranteed results of course.

And here’s the best kicker – even if you can’t sell it for $197, you would now ‘effortlessly’ sell it for $47.

Disclaimer: Don’t ever apply this tactic if you know that your product does not have that kind of content. You’re just increasing the value for how much you should be paid so that you’re not underpaid for your content.

You see, one of the strongest human desires is to learn, to be educated and to better ourselves, no matter what the subject is. It could be …

To live longer and healthier, to be a better parent, partner or lover, to raise children well, to earn more money, to work fewer hours or to own a nicer home or faster car, maybe play a sport better or even just bake tastier cakes, everyone wants information and nearly all would be prepared to pay for it.

Effective List Building Strategy

This is one of my favorite long term ways to build my lists on autopilot. What you do is create a PDF report with giveaway rights (and resell rights if you like). If you look around, it wouldn’t be hard to find an existing giveaway promotion. Like this month, I’m participating in 777SelfHelp to build my list.

Once your report is out, other internet marketers pass it along throughout the internet to their lists because you have a good report (make sure the report contains some of the best information you know).

At the end of this report will be a free offer that leads to one of your squeeze pages.

You’ll find you get 20 subs here and 20 subs there. That’s powerful. Because you just take a few hours to write a report, get it in the hands of a few people, and it can spread throughout the net like a virus with no more work on your part.

Another benefit of using viral reports to build your list is that doing this is much like article marketing (except without slaving away to dominate Google). Here’s what I mean: Readers of your report become your subscribers. This is much like a reader of an article becoming your subscriber. The report sells yourself and plants your level of expertise into the reader’s mind. In a way, it pre-sells whatever you’re selling.

Using viral reports to build your list is different than setting up a squeeze page, getting a subscriber, convincing them that you’re credible, then selling to them.

Instead, your report convinces the prospect that you’re credible, then they opt-in on your squeeze page, then they buy. Before they even read your first e-mail, you’ve already built at least some level of trust in you because of the expert information within the report.

If you want to use viral reports to build your list, then simply:

1. Write a short, amazing report with giveaway rights and make sure to put a link to your squeeze page at the end of the report.. Give away your best information so that readers of the report will feel inspired to pass it on (give away the type of secrets you only discover in high dollar courses).

2. Get the report into the hands of your current subscribers/JV partners/others and watch it go viral.

If you want to make it easier to be spread, then just allow your affiliates and JV partners to brand the report with their affiliate link to your product.

How To Write Your Report In 24 Hours Or Less?

I’ll give you fast start tactics to creating your very own report and some of these tactics will literally enable you to do this in 24 hours or less. Your report should have these characteristics:

i) Short and sweet, between 3-20 pages, not more
You’d want to hold the attention of your readers, so being too draggy will discourage that. And if they decide to close and read it another time, you can be 90% sure that never happens.

ii) Tightly themed around the topic you had decided on

iii) A great title
The title must convey strong emotion, benefits and command instant attention.

With that said, here’s a 2-step guideline to get you started in creating your report:

1. Create A Template

The easiest way to begin is by creating an outline, or standard template, which you can use for unlimited reports.

Begin your outline with an ‘Introduction’. It’s the best opportunity to introduce yourself and inform readers exactly what they can get out of the report.

The next step will be to either create a Table of Contents.

Make sure your chapter titles are descriptive and ‘attention grabbing’ too. This is a good way to ensure your ebooks get READ!

Finally, include a ‘final word’ or conclusion.

Here’s a simple format based on the above you can model on:

Introduction

Table Of Contents

Chapter One

Chapter Two

Chapter Three

Conclusion

2. Get content fast

This is the most tedious and for many, scary part. But don’t worry you’ll be filling your report with content in no time flat. The challenge would be to create or get relevant content fast.

You can get content related to what your market wants quickly by using what’s already available!

The following are 4 powerful techniques in generating instant report content:

- Compiling Offline News

Write a quick report or commentary on important issues related to your market that you’ve read offline. For example, a piece on search engine news in the tech section of your local newspaper, or a good magazine write-up in ‘Entrepreneurs’.

I’m NOT advocating ‘copying’ content; instead use them as a guide or framework for a commentary in your own words.

A quick way to use this method: Look at various recent magazines of the same niche and grab ideas off them. Try doing this at your local library where it’s quiet and relaxing. To do something of this nature online, you can visit news site of your targeted market. For instance, try www.internetnews.com for IT niche market.

- Outsourcing

Another way to create content is simply to outsource it, be it free or paid.

A popular method to create products used by many ‘writers’ would be to engage ‘ghostwriters’. Ghostwriters are behind-the-scenes writers who will create a product (book, article, etc.) for you for a fee.

The advantage is you retain the copyright and get to put your name on the finished product as if it’s your own – becoming an instant writer in this way.

While I’m not sure you’d want to use this approach for reports, it’s an option you can consider. Try looking for quality ‘ghostwriters’ at www.elance.com and www.guru.com.

A much ‘cheaper’ method of outsourcing your writing is by Joint Ventures.

This is a commonly used approach to creating reports on the fly. Send a polite email to experts asking for help and contribution. This can be in the forms of short interviews with these experts.

Or co-author with an expert and give them a promotion in the report as well. This will need some ironing out but the advantages are obvious, especially if the people you approach are famous. You get an instant boost to your business and name.

Not all will reply and help you out.

- Forums

This resource is a fast way of getting contributing writers for your report. Post a request in your favorite forums. You’ll be surprised at the positive responses received. The respond rate will increase if the forums are active and highly participated.

Offer people an attractive incentive to help you. This could be anything from a link to their website or valuable bonus (products, resale packages, free ads, etc.).

- Public Domain Information

Public domain information can be classified as copyright-free works that is available for the public to grab and use. This includes text, books, images, music, etc. They may fall into either of these categories:

i. Information and figures from the government and it’s agencies

ii. Publicly available materials donated by writers and contributors, or

iii. Works which becomes public information due to loss of copyrights

In general works that are created before 1923 is in the public domain now. Those created between 1924 and 1963 is in the public domain unless the copyright was renewed (and mostly they’re not renewed).

How can you create mini ebooks using public domain?

You can simply modify and re-compile them into your own! Some creativity and planning may be required here, but anything you modify from the public domain automatically gives you a copyright on the modified version (with enough modications), lasting 50 years after your death.

The easiest way to find public domain information is to type in ‘public domain’ as search terms into any search engine.

Or try “Project Gutenberg” which is an amazing archive of thousands public domain books you can grab instantly at www.gutenberg.org.
